Source/info: https://itteren.nl/wegkruis-pasestraat/ Official description from the municipality: Monument number: GM-3706 Details: Crucifix Crucifix at the intersection between the Pasestraat and a field path. It is a hardstone cross from the first half of the twentieth century. The cross arms have a trefoil shape. The cross stands on a profiled base. The following text is engraved on the base of the cross: ‘Here God, protect Itteren and Hare from the water’. Behind the cross is a hedge flanked by two lime trees and in front of the cross two hardstone posts, between which a chain was once stretched (now disappeared). The space between the posts and the cross is paved with modern gravel tiles. The object has cultural-historical value as a local expression of Catholicism and as a religious marker of two roads. The cross is situated in the vicinity of the Meuse and was erected as protection against high water. It is also of art-historical importance.

AI overview The church in Borgharen has been closed with immediate effect in April 2025 due to structural defects, but the church in nearby Itteren will remain open for the time being. Due to the closure in Borgharen, services have been moved to the church in Itteren. However, the future of the church in Itteren is uncertain due to declining revenues. Borgharen situation: The Sint-Corneliuskerk in Borgharen is closed due to the risk of collapse (rotted structural parts and falling stones). Ittteren situation: Services have been moved to the church of Itteren. Definitive closure: According to earlier plans, both churches would close around January 1, 2026, but the situation in Borgharen has accelerated this.

The parish of St. Martin was founded before or around the year 1000. It is not known when the first and second churches were built. The first church is said to have been made of wood and the second church of marl. The west tower was built in the 14th century. The Gothic choir was built in 1626. In the period 1664-1806/1820 (depending on the source), the church was used by the Roman Catholic parish of H. Martinus and the then Reformed (Protestant) community of Geul. It was also a refuge for Protestants living on the other side of the Maas in the land of Rekem. In the years 1919-1920, a part was demolished and rebuilt. The church at the time, which was demolished, would have been the third church. From this church, after a cross enlargement, only the priest's choir, which is now used as a daily chapel, and the tower remain. The new nave was rebuilt through the existing church and is based on the design of the Maastricht architect Hubert van Groenendael. This gave the church its typical cross shape.
