The Locks of Trezzo sull'Adda represent a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering set in a landscape of rare beauty, where the force of the river meets human ingenuity. Located in the shadow of the majestic Visconti Castle, these structures were fundamental in making the Adda navigable, ideally connecting Lake Como to Milan via the Naviglio della Martesana canal. Walking along the towpath, one admires the contrast between the industrial archaeology of the Taccani Power Plant and the slow flow of water between the Adda's 'ceppo' rock walls. It is a place where the history of Leonardo da Vinci, who studied fluid motion here, merges with lush nature, offering evocative views and a suspended atmosphere that tells of centuries of navigation and river work.

A long and very varied cycle path with diverse environments and points of interest along the route, where the initial part runs through Leonardo's Adda ecomuseum, places where Leonardo da Vinci designed and carried out several hydraulic experiments with the river. The cycle-pedestrian path winds alongside the Adda river between Cassano d’Adda and Lecco, mainly on wide dirt roads. During the route, we will have the opportunity to see monumental works and world heritage sites such as the Edison and Enel hydroelectric dams, Crespi d’Adda, the locks designed by Leonardo and his ferry, a revolutionary hydromechanical work for its time. In the final stretch, we will skirt the lakes of Olginate and Garlate and important natural areas, finally reaching the center of Lecco for a snack or a coffee.

The imposing water wheel (about eleven meters in diameter) was built in the early 17th century by Cardinal Federico Borromeo to lift water from the canal and convey it to the nearby Archbishop's Palace. A washhouse can be seen near the wheel.

nice cycle/pedestrian section under the A4 along the Adda, shame that near the castle further ahead it has been blocked for too long!

In the center of town, on the right bank of the Martesana Canal, stands an imposing waterwheel (popularly known as a rudun) said to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci himself. Despite appearances, the wheel is not a mill, but a noria. Its function, in fact, was never to grind grain or power machinery, but rather to lift water from the canal to channel it into an irrigation system.

We are in Groppello, a hamlet in the municipality of Cassano d'Adda, and we must go back in time to 1618, when Cardinal Federico Borromeo commissioned this large wheel to convey the water needed to irrigate the vegetable gardens and gardens of the Archbishop's Villa. It is said that this majestic work, at the Cardinal's request, was designed by Leonardo da Vinci himself. Which, if anything, adds to its charm.
