There are a few bunkers situated along the path. They're well preserved from outside; however, not looked after inside- full of poo bags and other rubbish. A very interesting part of the history.

Canal bank on southern side is grazed by cattle between bridge and the coast. Canal bank on northern side is not enclosed so much safer for dog walkers.

Tetney Lock is situated on the canal linking the North Sea and Louth. It is popular for fishing and kayaking, and if you have neither of those items to hand, drinking and eating are on offer at the Crown & Anchor.

Yes, during the grey seal pupping season (late October to December), specific restrictions are in place to protect the seals. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and are not permitted in the immediate vicinity of the seal viewing areas. Always follow local signage and guidance from wardens to ensure the safety of both your dog and the wildlife.
The terrain in Donna Nook is predominantly flat, featuring expansive sand dunes, inter-tidal mudflats, and vast salt marshes. Most walking routes follow grassy tracks along sea banks and coastal paths. While generally accessible, some areas can be sandy or muddy, so waterproof footwear is recommended for both you and your dog.
Yes, Donna Nook offers several easy dog-friendly routes. For instance, the The Crown & Anchor – Tetney Lock loop from Tetney is an easy 3.5 km hike with minimal elevation, perfect for a relaxed outing with your dog and family. Another easy option is the Tetney Lock – Tetney Lock loop from Tetney, which is around 6.2 km.
Yes, many of the dog-friendly trails in Donna Nook are circular. For example, the The Crown & Anchor – Tetney Lock loop from Tetney offers a 7.5 km circular route, allowing you to start and finish at the same point without retracing your steps.
While Donna Nook is beautiful year-round, the best time to visit with your dog outside of the seal pupping season (late October to December) is generally spring or summer. During these months, you can enjoy milder weather and fewer restrictions on dog access, allowing for more freedom on the trails. If visiting during seal season, be prepared for strict lead rules and designated viewing areas.
Parking is available at designated car parks within or near the reserve. It's advisable to check specific trailheads for parking availability. During peak seal season, parking areas can become very busy, so plan to arrive early.
Donna Nook is a haven for wildlife, especially birds. You might spot Brent geese, waders, various ducks, and many migratory species. While the grey seals are a major attraction, remember to keep your dog on a lead and maintain a respectful distance from all wildlife to avoid disturbance, particularly during nesting or pupping seasons.
While specific dog-friendly establishments directly within the reserve are limited, there are often pubs and cafes in nearby villages like Saltfleet or Tetney that welcome well-behaved dogs. It's always a good idea to call ahead to confirm their dog policy before visiting.
The dog-friendly trails in Donna Nook are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Reviewers often praise the peaceful coastal scenery, the flat and accessible paths, and the unique opportunity for wildlife spotting, even with dogs (when following guidelines). Many appreciate the sense of open space and the 'big skies' of the Lincolnshire coast.
For a longer adventure with your dog, consider routes like the Louth Canal Bridge – Tetney Marshes loop from 12th Avenue, which covers over 10 km. Another excellent option is The Crown & Anchor – Tetney Marshes loop from 5th Avenue, also around 10 km, offering a moderate challenge and extended coastal views.
Beyond keeping your dog on a lead, especially near wildlife, be aware of the coastal environment. Tides can affect access to certain areas, and the weather can change quickly. The Ministry of Defence bombing range is also active in the area; always stick to designated paths and observe any red flags indicating military training for your safety and your dog's.
