Great views across Dedham Vale

A good stretch and even though I prefer to be on road, I use this when travelling northbound out of Harlow the summer, so as to avoid the climbs on the minor road to the east.

beautiful gravel lane with top views

A fine body of water and a good cycling option in the area. Good views on all sides, and plenty of bird spotting to be had.

Pleasant track through the sheep fields with a good surface most of the year round. If it's been raining heavily recently then best to avoid if you're on a skinny tyred bike.

Escaping north east from Chelmsford on quiet, flowing lanes. A pleasure to ride with fields on all sides.

Interesting museum dedicated to the history of trains in East Anglia. Even if you don't go in, the old station is worth a look.

Are there longer, more challenging traffic-free touring routes for experienced cyclists?

While many routes are gentle, there are options for those seeking a longer, more challenging ride with minimal traffic. The Billericay to Maldon loop via Hanningfield Reservoir, for instance, is rated as difficult, covering over 72 km with significant elevation gain, offering a rewarding experience for seasoned touring cyclists.

What is the best time of year to go touring cycling in Essex?

The generally mild climate of Essex makes it suitable for touring cycling for much of the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery, with fewer crowds than peak summer. How can I find less crowded no-traffic touring routes?

To find less crowded routes, consider exploring areas slightly off the main tourist trails or cycling during off-peak times (weekdays, early mornings). Komoot's route planner allows you to filter by popularity and difficulty, helping you discover hidden gems. Routes through the rolling farmland or lesser-known parts of Epping Forest can offer a more solitary experience.
