High above Pappenheim in the Middle Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, the remains of an impressive spur castle tower. The complex rises on an elongated rocky ridge, which the Altmühl river encircles in a striking loop. It once served as the ancestral seat for the imperial ministerials and later Counts of Pappenheim – a noble family of considerable political importance. Today, the ruin is one of the outstanding examples of medieval castle architecture in Bavaria. Just a few hundred meters west-southwest, on a wooded hilltop, traces of an even older fortification, known as the „Alte Bürg”, can also be recognized.

The functions of Lake Altmühl in Bavaria are diverse: It serves to regulate water management, as a temporary reservoir for the Danube-Main system, to raise the Altmühl's low water levels, and for flood protection. At the same time, it is an important destination for tourism and recreation, offering activities such as sailing, swimming, and cycling, as well as an important sanctuary for waterfowl, particularly the "Bird Island" in the north of the lake. The cycle path around the lake is largely separated from pedestrians. Almost 100% paved. There are three lake centers with numerous restaurants.
