In 1689 the church was almost completely destroyed by French troops under General Melac – only the choir and nave remained and were provisionally covered with a roof. In this makeshift condition, the church served the community as a place of worship for almost 150 years. The current tower spire was only added in 1905/06, according to plans by Karl Krauß and Jakob Schmitt. The bells also have a turbulent history: the oldest of the four bronze bells dates from 1921, the others were melted down in 1940 and only replaced by three new ones in 1953. Most recently, the church was extensively renovated in 2018–2020.

The classicist public fountain was created around 1820 and once served the people of Alzey as a practical water source. Today, it dispenses its water from four bronze lion heads into small basins – an eye-catcher in the middle of the Obermarkt, directly in front of the backdrop of the Nikolaikirche. However, the water is not intended for drinking, as a sign reveals.
