This small St. Michael's Chapel is a memorial to the victims of war and violence at the most beautiful vantage point in Weyher, with a magnificent panoramic view (into the Rhine plain and along the Haardt). It “was erected in 1951 through the voluntary efforts of the citizens of the municipality of Weyher. The red sandstone comes from the village quarries. […] The Latin inscription carved in stone on the chapel, ‘ex voto‘ (as a vow), recalls a promise made on March 16, 1945, by the local pastor Martin Wothe (1875 – 1969) as he observed the air raids on the town of Landau: If the village were spared destruction, a chapel should be built to remember the inferno of war and to urge peace. The Archangel Michael is seen as the protector of the Christian Church, a helper in times of need and danger, and stands by people in difficult times and in their final hour. He is considered the patron saint of the Germans, as well as the patron saint of knights and soldiers. […] The Latin inscription ‘Lux perpetua luceat eis‘ (May perpetual light shine upon them) is dedicated to the numerous victims of the World Wars from the community. In 1976, two sandstone tablets were attached to the side walls, which recall by name all the fallen and missing men: 28 in the First World War and 56 in the Second World War. […] Every year on the Sunday around September 29th, the feast day of St. Michael, the victims of war and tyranny are commemorated here. […] The St. Michael's Chapel is a memorial against forgetting. It is a place of humility and silence, which makes us realize the abysses into which all forms of racism, violence, and hatred can lead. It calls on us never to cease striving for peaceful coexistence in our country and on Earth. […] A new information board […] calls for respecting the chapel and its surroundings.” Source (quoted verbatim): https://weyher.de/gedenken-an-opfer-von-krieg-und-gewaltherrschaft-70-jahre-st-michaelskapelle/

How did it come about that this bell fountain and the large memorial plaque for 9 brave men were built? "In the church tower [of the Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul in Weyher] rings the oldest continuous church bell chime in the Palatinate. And this is how it happened: In 1794, young men from the village saved the bells from the French Revolutionary armies. The bells, already removed from the tower by the soldiers, were to be collected the next day and melted down. During the night, the young men took the bells out of the village and buried them in a freshly cleared vineyard. Despite many reprisals, the bells could not be found. Only in 1804 was the danger over, the bells were dug up from the earth and, to the great jubilation of the inhabitants, returned to their original place. After the then mayor Peter Eberle, who remained steadfast despite imprisonment in the Landau fortress and did not reveal the names of the bell rescuers, a street was named in the new development area." A shaded picnic bench nestled among the vineyards with a fine view of Ludwigshohe palace on the hillside. A wonderful spot to rest and enjoy the peaceful wine landscape. The trail through the vines here is particularly scenic.

One of the best viewpoints in the Palatinate Forest — a sweeping panorama over the vineyard plain stretching all the way to the Rhine and beyond. The rocky outcrop at the castle makes this spot especially dramatic and photogenic.

Charming wine village at the foot of the Haardt mountains with beautiful half-timbered houses. A lovely place to stop, explore the quiet streets, and sample local Palatinate wines at one of the family-run estates.
