Loitz only recovered in the second half of the 18th century from the great city fire of 1701 and the damage from various wars (including the Seven Years' War). The town hall is therefore a visible sign of the city's recovery after a long period of decline.

The church is closely connected with Sophia Hedwig (1561–1631), the last Duchess of Pomerania-Wolgast. She lived for a long time in her widow's seat in Loitz and financed the major renovation around 1600: the church was extended by three bays to the east to make space for her princely loge. At the same time, she had the choir demolished. She also donated a valuable church library (one of the oldest preserved hand libraries for pastors in the region) and ancestral/coat of arms panels for her loge in 1621.
