The Roman Catholic Herrgottsruhkapelle in Mindelheim in the Unterallgäu district (Bavaria) was built at the beginning of the 18th century and is a listed building. The chapel building stands halfway up the Katharinenberg on Memminger Straße. Before the chapel was built in 1718, there was a wayside shrine with a Herrgottsruh figure at this location. The St. Sebastian beneficiary Johann Hörmele (Hermele) had the chapel that still exists today built. The building was renovated in 1850 and again from 1954 to 1957. The building is designed as a longitudinal oval structure, which is oriented towards the south. Both inside and outside, the chapel is structured by partially red marbled Tuscan pilasters. The pilasters, decorated with entablature pieces, result in eight axes, the central axes of the long sides being wider. There are no pilasters on the sides of the altar. Inside, there is a flat, vaulted ceiling with eight web caps over semicircular shield arches. Recessed round-arched windows are present in each of the diagonal axes. The floor is laid with square slabs of Solnhofen limestone. The shingle-covered roof of the chapel is conically rounded at the narrow sides. Above the ridge rises the hexagonal open roof turret with an onion dome. Access to the chapel is via a segmental arched door in the northern apex. In front of it is the square and flat-roofed porch. There is a round-arched arcade on three sides. Above the cornice, the porch is covered with a hipped roof. The relief made of shell limestone depicting the Resurrection of Christ on the central axis of the east side was created in 1964 by Georg Bayer. In its place, a weathered fresco of a crucifixion group from the time of construction was uncovered in 1904. A sacristan's house is attached to the west side. This two-story building with a gable roof has been renovated. The stucco of the chapel is limited to picture frames and dates from 1718. In the vault apex, there is a curved field in the middle and four-lobed fields in the north and south. Smaller curved fields are in the spandrels. Georg Schwank from Mindelheim created the frescoes inside in 1957. They follow the remains of the original paintings from 1718. In the middle is the Eye of God with four angel heads, ... Inside, there are frescoes by Georg Schwank from 1957, which continue the original paintings from 1718, as well as a wooden altar from the mid-18th century with the figure of the Savior at Rest.

I left the Catholic Church about 30 years ago, but I still visit chapels and churches during my bike tours. In Unter- and Oberallgäu, many are worth seeing and also far from tourist paths. The pilgrimage church is not very beautiful for my taste. Great are e.g. Ottobeuren, Obergünzburg, Sulzberg or Nesselwang.

Krumbach's market square is the town's historical heart. Protected from flooding, it sits on a small plateau. The most striking building is undoubtedly the historic half-timbered town hall, dating from 1679. The square was formerly used as a granary. Here, trade, government, and daily life took place.
