The Wiegenstein near Traunstein is a stone weighing approximately 120 tons that can be moved by human hands. The stone got its name from this legend: The legend tells that the Mother of God Mary came to the Waldviertel on a hike when she was still on earth. It was a hot day and the baby Jesus had already fallen asleep in her hand. She placed the child in the middle of the forest on a large stone block that had a very soft moss cushion on top. Maria sat down next to it in the shade and it didn't take long for Maria to fall asleep too. Then angels came from heaven and gently began to rock the huge stone and sing a lullaby. After a while, Mary woke up and she and the baby Jesus were able to continue their journey strengthened. This is how the cradle stone got its name.

The rock is 5 m high, 7 m long and 3 m wide. It is a leaning granite block in the shape of a wobbly stone. The following story is told in town: When a company of French soldiers were quartered in Bad Traunstein in 1809, the soldiers made fun of the huge, but apparently only lightly resting block of stone. They made a bet with the population to collapse the block into the meadow. But the wobbly stone didn't move an inch. The French left in anger. From then on, the wobbly stone was called the “French stone”.

Josef Elter, born in Kernei, Batschka in 1926, was pastor of Bad Traunstein from 1957 until his death in 1997. 1959 - 1962 he and the population built the modern parish church of Traunstein. From 1967 he created sculptures in stone and wood, as well as woodcuts. The focus of his work was the search for the reduced form with great universal expression. His works can be viewed in the Josef Elter exhibition center (built in 1992), which he planned and built. http://www.josef-elter.info/index2.php
