St. Tönis originally belonged to the parish of St. Mary's Birth Kempen and initially had no church. This changed in 1380, when the Archbishop of Cologne, Friedrich III of Saarwerden, approved the construction of a chapel and the creation of a cemetery in St. Tönis in a document dated September 10th. The chapel, built in the 1390s, received a bell tower in 1483. In 1554, the church's affiliation with Kempen ended, St. Tönis became an independent parish and the chapel also became a parish church. Due to the effects of war, the bell tower collapsed in 1585 and the rest of the church was also badly damaged. A new church tower was not built until 1619, but it was set on fire again in 1642 during the Thirty Years' War, as was the entire church building. While the nave was subsequently restored, the tower was fitted with a temporary roof. It was not until 1851 that the tower received a proper spire again.

The building is a three-story brick house built in 1857 with a small cross gable. The good architecture therefore makes it an important testimony to the architecture of the time. The house also forms an essential part of the old town center in St. Tönis. It is therefore an important testimony to the history of the place.

The church is the parish church of St. Godehard. The church was inaugurated in 1896 and offers space for around 2,100 believers on 700 square meters. A number that seems extremely unrealistic these days. 250,000 bricks from Vorster Erde were burned and used to build the church. The costs for the new building (183,000 marks) were raised by the community itself. A remarkable achievement for such a small place. Until the end of the 1960s, the interior was one of the most beautiful and magnificent on the Lower Rhine. The main altar in the choir came from the artist's workshop of Ferdinand Langenberg from Goch and was awarded a gold medal at an exhibition. While the Marienaltar was created in 1902 by artist Cramer from Kempen, the cross altar created by Finally in 1890 is the oldest of the three altars in the Vorst parish church.
