My personal highlight of today's tour through new areas! The renaturalized Sulzbach stream in the tranquil park (despite being in the heart of Frankfurt and adjacent to the A66 motorway) is truly inviting and perfect for relaxing and taking a breather. It's always amazing what hidden gems Frankfurt has to offer!

Eschborn and its surroundings offer a vast network of routes suitable for gravel biking with minimal traffic. This guide features over 240 such tours, ranging from easy to difficult, ensuring there's something for every skill level.
You'll find a diverse mix of terrain. The
Taunus Mountains to the north provide challenging climbs and descents on wide forest paths and some singletracks, often with a 'strade bianche flair'. The
Arboretum Main-Taunus offers more tranquil, relatively flat paths amidst diverse flora. Along the
Nidda River Landscape, you can expect gentler rides on mixed surfaces, including gravel and paved sections. The broader
Regionalpark RheinMain connects these areas with varied landscapes of woods, meadows, and fields.
Absolutely. While many routes in the Taunus are considered difficult due to significant elevation, there are also numerous moderate and easy options. This guide includes 26 easy, 97 moderate, and 117 difficult tours, ensuring suitable challenges for beginners to advanced gravel bikers.
Many routes offer stunning views and interesting sights. You can enjoy panoramic views of the Frankfurt skyline, especially from higher points in the Taunus. Highlights include the Großer Feldberg Summit, the tranquil Nidda River Landscape, and the expansive View of the Frankfurt skyline from the Main River cycle path. Some routes also pass by historical sites like the Saalburg Roman fort.
Yes, while many Taunus routes are demanding, the flatter sections along the Nidda River and within the Arboretum Main-Taunus offer excellent, traffic-free options for families. These areas provide scenic and relaxed riding experiences suitable for all ages.
Several routes pass by welcoming spots where you can refuel. For example, the popular Fuchstanz: The Forest Inn – View of Frankfurt Skyline loop from Eschborn includes the well-known Fuchstanz: The Forest Inn. Other options include Anita's Fuchstanz and Waldgasthof Gundelhard, often found along forest paths.
The komoot community highly rates the gravel biking experience around Eschborn, with an average score of 4.4 stars. Riders frequently praise the diverse terrain, from challenging forest paths in the Taunus to serene riverside trails, and the rewarding panoramic views of the Frankfurt skyline. The extensive network of traffic-free paths is also a major highlight.
Yes, the majority of the gravel bike tours featured in this guide are designed as circular loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point without needing to arrange transport back. Examples include the Fuchstanz: The Forest Inn – View of Frankfurt Skyline loop from Eschborn and the Jupiter Column near Saalburg – Saalburg Roman fort loop from Schwalbach Nord.
Tour durations vary significantly based on distance and elevation. Shorter routes might take a couple of hours, while longer, more challenging tours like the Sulzbach Valley – Mönchwald Lake loop from Schwalbach Limes (over 100 km) can easily take 5-6 hours or more to complete at a moderate pace.
Eschborn is well-connected within the Rhine-Main region, making many starting points accessible by public transport. You can often reach towns and villages near the Taunus, Nidda, and Regionalpark areas via local trains (S-Bahn) and buses, which can accommodate bikes during off-peak hours. It's advisable to check specific transport schedules and bike policies before your trip.
Gravel biking is generally possible year-round, though winter conditions require more caution. While some paths in the Taunus might be muddy or icy, especially at higher elevations, the lower-lying routes and well-maintained paths in the Arboretum or along the Nidda River can still offer enjoyable rides. Always check weather forecasts and trail conditions before heading out in winter.
