Gradierbau (Langewand) near Bad Nauheim: A sea breeze in the heart of Hesse! When you cycle between Schwalheim and Bad Nauheim into these huge, thorn-covered wooden structures, you'll immediately notice: The air is different here! The Gradierbau (graduation towers) are the oldest and second-longest of their kind in Germany; the five remaining ones, which were once used for salt production, are a total of 650 meters long. Imagine, brine was pumped up here and trickled over blackthorn brushwood – the water evaporated, and the salt content rose from 3 to 22 percent. A clever piece of industrial history from the 18th century! But the best effect is the effect today: The salty air feels like a fresh sea breeze, clearing your airways after a long ride. Park your bike, do some breathing exercises as you pass by, and maybe pick up some information about the Celtic salt makers at Gradierbau I. Rarely does one find such a healthy and exciting break right on the bike path!
