Duderstadt has a very beautiful old town center

Originally built as a city gate, the Westerturm, along with its watchtowers, rampart, and wall, is part of the town's sophisticated medieval fortification system. The lovingly restored town wall with its battlements and towers provides a vivid impression of bygone days. No matter from which direction you approach Duderstadt, your gaze is always captivated by the tower with its spire, whose elegant left-hand twist is striking. There are quite a number of twisted towers in German-speaking areas, but none whose twist exhibits such harmonious lines as Duderstadt's Westerturm. Directly in front of the city wall lies the Stadtpark. Together with the ramparts, where lime trees and chestnut trees up to 300 years old grow, and the Bürgergärten (citizens' gardens), it forms a green ring around the old town. The idyllic Obertorteich, once also part of the sophisticated defensive systems, belongs to this as well. A footpath on the ramparts repeatedly offers beautiful views of the old town's houses.

Hundreds of half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, and ramparts: With its complete medieval townscape, a visit to Duderstadt in Southern Lower Saxony is also a trip into the past. More than 600 half-timbered houses from different centuries shape the historic center of the small town in southeastern Lower Saxony. As many are listed buildings, they are carefully maintained. Only a few towns still have such a complete medieval townscape. Alleys and streets in Duderstadt run through the rows of houses virtually unchanged to this day. The Schützenbrunnen (Marksmen's Fountain) between the Mariensäule and St. Cyriakus Church also strongly evokes Duderstadt's history. It was created in 1997 by the sculptor Rudi Pabel on the occasion of the "750 years of Brunswick town privileges in Duderstadt" and embodies the historical connection between the Marksmen's Association and the town. It bears the inscription: "Town and marksmen firmly united – an eternally strong bond".
