St. Mary's Church in Witzwort was built around 1420 in Romanesque-Gothic style. The choir was rebuilt around 1900, and the wooden bell tower dates from 1631 and stands on the eastern edge of the church mound. The numerous paintings of former pastors from the period between 1728 and 1928 are interesting and noteworthy. The church's most precious treasure is a three-part altar, which, with its richness unique to Eiderstedt, is attributed to the Brüggemann School. Since 2004, the village church has been illuminated from three sides at night during the winter. St. Mary's Church in Witzwort, with its bell tower and churchyard, are listed as a cultural monument. Also a cultural monument and worth seeing, although not open to the public, is the rectory at Glockensteg 1 in Witzwort. Gravestones over 400 years old can be found across the mound of St. Mary's Church. They were formerly gravestones for pastors and large farmers. They bear death dates from 1574 and 1690. St. Mary's Church in Witzwort is one of eighteen historic churches on Eiderstedt. The small village church has artistically and theologically important furnishings. Today's Witzwort church is probably not the first church to be built in Witzwort. According to Anton Heimreich, the first church is said to have stood "on the Fuhrwege". Today's single-nave Gothic brick building was built around 1420 on a high mound. The side walls of the flat-roofed nave date from the time of construction. A conversion took place in the middle of the 19th century: the roof and ridge turret were renewed, the windows were enlarged and today's south portal was created, and the post-medieval west wall was secured with massive pillars. In 1898 the dilapidated medieval choir was replaced by a neo-Gothic new building, in which stucco consoles and keystones from the previous building were used. The isolated stack of bells dates from 1631. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St.-Marien-Kirche_(joke word)
