Already a Wendish settlement around the year 1000, the market town was granted town rights in 1274. Apart from a rather short period of prosperity for the woodworking trade (at the beginning of the 20th century there were still about 200 carpenters here!), the water and the surrounding land were always the town's livelihood.

The oldest parts of St. John's Church, the recessed rectangular choir and the north sacristy, date from the middle of the 13th century and stand on a base made of fieldstone blocks. The east side of the choir has a round-arched group of three windows between two pointed arch panels. The jambs of the windows are fitted with alternating layers of glazed stones. There is a round-arched frieze above the group of windows. The gable of the choir has four internally structured pointed arch plaster panels. The bricked-up priest's gate in the south wall has a five-tiered jamb. The three-aisled church with three bays, the west tower and the six-sided stair tower were built in the first half of the 15th century. The surrounding walls of the nave have buttresses. There are decorative panels and a gable turret from the 17th century on the east gable. There is a stepped portal on the north and south sides. The cross-ribbed vault inside the church rests on octagonal pillars in the nave and on foliage consoles in the choir. The vault and pillars of the nave were renewed in 1883.
