Alte Kottmarbaude and Kottmarturm On the 583-meter-high Kottmar, the historic Baude (mountain hut) and the observation tower form a striking ensemble. The listed Kottmarturm was built in 1881. Its base is made of local phonolite, and above it rises the slender brick structure with more than 75 steps. Just a few meters away stands the Alte Kottmarbaude. It was built around 1882 as a popular mountain and excursion restaurant and was later expanded several times. Inside, there are remarkable ceiling paintings by the Upper Lusatian artist Max Langer. Since 2008, the Baude has been closed, and the observation tower cannot currently be climbed either. However, a dedicated project is working to secure the historic ensemble and gradually revive it. Despite the closed buildings, a visit is worthwhile: The quiet summit area conveys a lot of Upper Lusatian history and hints at the importance the Baude and tower once had as an excursion destination. Further information on the preservation project: www.kottmarbaude.de Note: Observe the barriers and do not enter the buildings!
