The Mariahilf Church was built according to the plans of the renowned architect and master builder Giovanni Pietro de Pomis, a native of Milan and once a student of the Venetian painter Jacopo Tintoretto. As court architect to the imperial family, de Pomis designed, among other things, the mausoleum for Emperor Ferdinand II in Graz's old town. It was also Emperor Ferdinand who, together with the Princes of Eggenberg, provided the Minorites with the land for their convent and church. Originally, the Baroque church, modeled on Venetian examples, had no towers. These were added during renovations in the mid-18th century by the Austrian Baroque architect Josef Hueber. Although it is a Baroque church, the interior of the Mariahilf Church is relatively simple. Only the facade design displays the Baroque delight in filigree and artistry. The larger-than-life sculptures, in Mannerist poses, that dominate the entrance portal are particularly interesting. The artistic altarpiece with the Virgin Mary, which was also created by the universal genius Giovanni Pietro de Pomis and is considered one of his most important works, dates from the construction period of the Mariahilf Church.

A truly beautiful vantage point over the city of Graz. The clock tower stands on the Schlossberg hill, is 28 meters high, and is the landmark of Graz, the Styrian capital.

Despite their diversity in terms of era and purpose of creation, these remarkable symbols of civilization's history have one thing in common: they are recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. The accompanying text for the episode about Graz's old town states: "The roots of the city of Graz in Styria lie on the Schlossberg hill, first mentioned in 1128. It was called Gradec, which means "little castle" in German. In the 15th century, Graz was the capital of Inner Austria. The future Emperor Frederick III had a soft spot for the city and set the first architectural standards. He had a city castle built and the parish church of St. Aegydius, today's cathedral. As peaceful as Graz may seem to us today, it was always a fortified city (...)"
