Since the 13th century, the water of the Mühlbach, also called Gewerbekanal, has been driving grist mills, oil mills, and a paper mill. Above the Loh suburb, a weir diverted water from the Rench. The water was also used by the tanneries that had settled along the stream. It was also used to power hemp beaters, for bark mills to grind tanning bark, for grinding mills, fulling mills, sawmills, and trip hammers. In addition, the canal served to fill the moats of the city fortifications with water and to transport waste from the city.

Schonach artist Klaus Ringwald designed and built the Münsterbrunnen fountain on Villingen's Münsterplatz in 1989. This bronze work of art tells the city's 1,000-year history through text and images, sometimes humorously. Each of the artwork's eight sides is dedicated to a significant era for the city. The fountain contributes to ensuring that our beautiful city streams receive enough water and that both children and adults can enjoy a little refreshment in the summer. https://www.villingen-schwenningen.de/tourismus-erleben/vs-erleben/sehenswuerdigkeiten/stadtbezirk-villingen/stadtbrunnen/
