Tips from the Community

JT
August 25, 2025, Víðgelmir Lava Cave

The tour ends at the source of the stream you follow. However, about 100 meters further, following the path and a slight incline to the right, you reach a small plateau with a magnificent view. I would definitely recommend this extension. On the way back, you don't reach the lava cave, but rather Selvfallafoss. That's also very beautiful.

The Kirkjufellsá river falls there in two stages, totalling 16 metres down. The waterfall is always well attended and offers a very beautiful photo opportunity.

We visit the most photographed landmark, the 463-meter-high Kirkjufell mountain. It is a picturesque mountain that rises high above the town of Grundarfjörður on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It is known as the most beautiful mountain in Iceland. A hike or climb to the top should not be attempted without a guide, as the narrow paths can be difficult to see even in summer. The narrowness of the paths makes it imperative that every step is the right one. Straying from the path has already proved fatal.

On the slope we kissed many peat rocks

Just before a stream we can follow a gully up to the left. Here we not only follow thick rock formations of rhyolitic tuff, but also the partly intensely orange colored stream bed and some springs lined with deep green moss contribute to the beautiful nature experience.

Jump over the stream and continue on sheep paths along the slope in a westerly direction. On the right we look out over the Selvallavatn.
