Archetypal English village with its large village green surrounded by pretty stone houses and two pubs. The open beck runs in front of the houses in Eastgate, each with their own private bridge. The banks of the stream are planted with flowers. A large flat circular stone on the green known as the whipping stone is probably the base of the old market cross but rumour has it that a man was whipped to death here in 1624. https://www.newbaldparishcouncil.gov.uk/about-newbald/

January 26, 2025, Kiplingcotes Station

Opened on 1 May 1865 and served the nearby village of Kiplingcotes. It was built originally for the personal use of a local landowner and MP, Lord Hotham, as an incentive for him to allow the railway to pass through his estates. The station closed after the last train ran on 27 November 1965 along with the rest of the line. The station building, platforms and signal box survive unaltered, as does the station master's house.

What kind of terrain can I expect on these gravel bike trails?

The no-traffic gravel bike trails in East Riding of Yorkshire offer diverse terrain. You'll find routes utilizing former railway lines, which are often flatter and provide moderate gravel riding, sometimes with paved sections. Other trails venture into the Yorkshire Wolds, featuring undulating chalk hills, quiet country lanes, and more challenging tracks. Expect a mix of hard gravel, compacted earth, and occasional paved sections.

Are there any family-friendly no-traffic gravel routes?

Yes, several routes are suitable for families looking for a gentler ride. The former railway lines, such as sections of the Market Weighton Rail Trail, are generally flatter and offer a more relaxed experience away from traffic. For example, the Market Weighton Rail Trail – Old Railway Line Trail loop from Cherry Burton is a moderate option that utilizes these types of paths.

Can I find circular gravel bike routes in the region?

Absolutely. Many of the no-traffic gravel routes in East Riding of Yorkshire are designed as circular loops, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. For instance, the North Newbald Village Green – Brantingham Village Pond loop from Brough offers a substantial circular ride through scenic countryside.

What are some scenic viewpoints or natural attractions along these trails?

East Riding of Yorkshire's gravel trails often pass through or near beautiful natural features.
