If you go down to the sunken garden between Sextons and the flower shop, you'll see the force of the water from the lower dam into Slitten Brook, and it flows into the Bridgewater canal

August 1, 2023, Manchester Ship Canal

The Manchester Ship canal is a 36 mile (58 km) inland waterway. It links Manchester with the Irish Sea. Construction began in 1887 and once completed it enabled Manchester to become Britain's fourth-largest port, despite being a considerable distance from the sea. Today the commercial use has declined as the ships have become larger, but there are plans for redevelopment.

The Bridgewater Canal is 39 mile (65 km), between Runcorn and Leigh. It was built over 250 years ago and was an important transport link for years. The canal trade declined with the introduction of the railways. Today it's a leisure industry with a wonderful toe path to walk.

The Thorn Inn is a Greene King pub. Reasonable drinks and food served 1200 - 2100 every day. Lots of room indoors and outside. A good place to start a walk along the Lumb Valley.

Beautiful in all seasons. Small woodland which is separated by a road but linked by a bridge which you can walk under if you have your wellies. Fantastic off the lead, lots of things for the kids to get stuck into, rope swings etc, but for our four legged family members just a brilliant place for them to roam around.
