Great to get make progress indeed, but I find it quite dull after 10 km. So if you are like me, take some "shortcuts" over the hills or go for other highlights along the path and then you will be happy to be back on the Vennbahn for some km ;)

Liège offers a vast network for touring cyclists, with over 3,300 dedicated no-traffic routes. These range from easy, leisurely rides to more challenging adventures through the Ardennes.
The no-traffic routes in Liège offer diverse terrain. Many follow the RAVeL network, utilizing old railway lines, which are generally flat or gently sloped and often paved. However, routes venturing into the Ardennes will feature rolling hills, dense forests, and significant elevation gains, providing a more challenging experience. The Meuse and Ourthe Valleys offer picturesque riverside paths, often blending urban culture with natural greenery.
Yes, many no-traffic routes in Liège are ideal for families. The RAVeL network, built on former railway lines, provides safe, mostly flat, and well-maintained paths away from vehicle traffic. Routes like the Monschau to Aachen on the Vennbahn are excellent examples, offering smooth surfaces and gentle gradients suitable for all ages.
Generally, dogs are welcome on leashes on most public cycling paths, especially those part of the RAVeL network. However, it's always advisable to check local regulations for specific sections or nature reserves, such as parts of the Hautes Fagnes Nature Park, to ensure compliance. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved and doesn't interfere with other cyclists or wildlife.
Liège's no-traffic routes are rich with sights. You can cycle past impressive limestone cliffs in the Meuse Valley, explore the unique moorlands of the Hautes Fagnes, or discover historic sites like Raeren Castle. For natural beauty, consider visiting the Bayehon Waterfall or the scenic Trôs Marets Valley. Many routes also pass through charming villages and offer views over river valleys.
Yes, Liège offers several circular no-traffic touring routes. For example, the Ovelo - around the lake from Bütgenbach provides a scenic loop around the lake. The extensive node network in the Province of Liège also makes it easy to plan and combine sections of RAVeL paths and quiet roads to create your own circular itineraries.
Liège is well-equipped for cyclists. Many routes, especially those following river valleys or passing through villages, have cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options. Look for "Bienvenue Vélo" establishments, which are cyclist-friendly businesses. The Vennbahn, for instance, connects several towns where you can find refreshments. For longer tours, consider staying at huts like Baraque Michel or facilities like Haus Ternell Nature Center.
The spring and autumn months (April-May and September-October) generally offer the most pleasant conditions for touring cycling in Liège, with mild temperatures and beautiful scenery. Summer (June-August) is also popular, though it can be warmer. Winter cycling is possible, especially on well-maintained RAVeL paths, but be prepared for colder temperatures and potentially wet or icy conditions.
Many routes are accessible by public transport, particularly those starting or ending in larger towns or near train stations. For parking, designated parking areas are often available at the start points of popular RAVeL sections or near major attractions. The city of Liège itself serves as a vibrant starting point with various transport links. Always check specific route details for recommended parking or public transport connections.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars. Reviewers often praise the region's diverse landscapes, from the challenging Ardennes climbs to the serene river valleys, and the extensive, well-maintained RAVeL network that ensures a truly traffic-free experience. The blend of natural beauty with historical sites and cyclist-friendly infrastructure is frequently highlighted as a major draw.
Absolutely. Liège is synonymous with cycling, being home to the challenging climbs of the historic Liège-Bastogne-Liège race. While these specific race routes might not be entirely traffic-free, many touring routes in the Ardennes region will traverse similar terrain and offer the same breathtaking views and challenging ascents that define this iconic race. You can experience the spirit of "La Doyenne" on routes that wind through the same hills and forests.
Yes, the RAVeL network and routes like the Vennbahn are part of larger European cycling networks. The Vennbahn, for example, connects Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg, offering a unique cross-border cycling experience. The EuroVelo 19, "The Meuse by Bike," also passes through Wallonia, connecting Liège to other historic cities and regions along the Meuse River.
