The so-called "Swedish Crosses" are memorial crosses commemorating those killed as victims of the often marauding (plundering) troops that roamed the country during those warlike times (the first half of the 17th century). However, in the strictest sense of the word, they are not "atonement crosses," because such crosses were to be erected by the perpetrators themselves as part of their atonement (penance) for their crimes, whereas memorial crosses were erected by people close to the victim (often family members, possibly friends, or neighbors).

The White Martyrdom has an eventful history: Father Urban Mittermayr is said to have died at the site of the chapel in 1634 while fleeing from the Swedes. The existence of a field chapel is documented for 1857. It is not known when a chapel was first built here and from what building material. A stone chapel was built around 1866. The current chapel was built in 1961 after the old chapel was demolished.
