Pestalozzi Statue, Place Pestalozzi, Yverdon-les-Bains Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746–1827) was a Swiss educator, pedagogue, and thinker, a pioneer of modern pedagogy. He dedicated his life to the education of poor children. He lived in Yverdon-les-Bains for 20 years. Heinrich Pestalozzi opened the first institute for poor children on his estate at Neuhaus. In 1804, he accepted the invitation of the municipality of Yverdon-les-Bains and founded the boys' institute in the Château. There, he developed the pedagogical principles of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and taught the children of the Yverdon bourgeoisie from 7 to 16 years old. At its peak, the institute welcomed nearly 150 children. Subsequently, he founded an institute for girls (1813–1836), which received the same education as boys, which was extremely rare at that time. An institute for the deaf and dumb (1813–1869) as well as an institute for poor children (1818–1819) were also founded. In 1977, the Pestalozzi Documentation and Research Center opened its doors with the aim of keeping Pestalozzi's thinking and innovative teaching methods alive, which had significantly influenced modern pedagogy. Today, a statue erected in his honor stands on the square that bears his name, in the heart of the old town, and a room in the castle is dedicated to him. Yverdon-les-Bains is still marked by the generosity of this extraordinary man. Yverdon-les-Bains hosts numerous sporting and cultural events every year, including the Le Castrum festival. https://yverdonlesbainsregion.ch/poi/centre-de-documentation-et-recherche-pestalozzi/
