Interesting rock formation, supposedly reminiscent of piano keys. To me, it reminds me more of organ pipes.

After the 2024 eruption, the mountain grew by a good 80 meters at this point. At the summit, there are small, hot vents where you can warm your hands in the steam 😉

The view of the summit craters of Etna is simply spectacular, but reaching them requires the accompaniment of a qualified volcanological guide for safety reasons. In spring, the landscape offers a suggestive contrast between the snow and the lava sand. The altitude, which touches 3,000 meters, requires caution and good physical preparation.

Valle del Bove, an immense natural amphitheater on Mount Etna, offers a truly unique volcanic hiking experience. You'll traverse extensive lava fields, observe solidified lava flows, and explore 'lunar landscapes' formed by centuries of eruptions. It's an open-air laboratory for geology enthusiasts, showcasing open fissures, fumaroles, and intriguing dikes. The dramatic walls and craters, like Monte Centenari and Monte Simone, tell a story of millennia of volcanic activity.
The best times for trekking in Valle del Bove are spring (April–June) for mild weather and blooming landscapes, and autumn (September–October) for great visibility and stunning colors. While summer is possible, it's advisable to avoid peak midday heat. Winter typically makes trails impassable without snowshoes due to heavy snowfall.
The trails listed in this guide are generally considered difficult, requiring a good level of fitness and experience. Valle del Bove offers a range of experiences, but many routes involve challenging volcanic terrain. For easier options, consider trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints on the valley's edges, which might be more accessible for families or less experienced hikers, though still requiring caution on volcanic ground.
You'll encounter a wealth of volcanic features, including ancient lava flows, unique geological formations like dikes, and dramatic crater walls. Notable viewpoints include Mount Zoccolaro and the famous View of the Valle del Bove from the Schiena dell'Asino. You might also spot the Statue of Our Lady of Providence on the lava flow, a unique man-made monument amidst the volcanic landscape.
Many of the routes in this region are considered difficult. For example, the View of Mount Etna – Serra delle Concazze loop from Monte Concazza is a demanding route with significant elevation gain. Another challenging option is the Cratere dell'Etna dal Piccolo Rifugio, which takes you closer to the summit craters.
Yes, there are several circular routes that allow you to experience the volcanic landscape without retracing your steps. Examples include the Etna Crater – Summit Craters of Mount Etna loop from Etna and the Central Crater – Etna Crater loop from Pizzi Dèneri, both offering comprehensive views of the volcanic features.
The komoot community highly rates the volcano hiking trails in Valle del Bove, with an average score of 4.6 out of 5 stars from over 900 ratings. Hikers often praise the breathtaking panoramic views, the unique 'lunar' volcanic landscapes, and the profound sense of being in an active geological area.
While specific regulations can vary, generally, dogs are permitted on many trails in the Etna Regional Park, including parts of Valle del Bove, provided they are kept on a leash. However, due to the challenging volcanic terrain and potential for active volcanic phenomena, it's always recommended to check local park rules or consult with a guide for specific routes, especially those at higher altitudes or near active areas.
Given the volcanic terrain and varying conditions, it's crucial to wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Layers of clothing are recommended, as temperatures can change rapidly, especially at higher elevations. Bring plenty of water, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and snacks. A windproof and waterproof jacket is also advisable. For more challenging routes, consider trekking poles.
While many trails are freely accessible, some higher-altitude areas or routes leading directly to the summit craters of Etna may require a licensed guide or specific permits due to safety regulations and the unpredictable nature of the volcano. It's always best to check the latest regulations from the Etna Regional Park authority or local guiding services before planning your hike, especially for routes like the Northeast Crater, Mount Etna – Etna Crater loop from Etna.
