James the Elder (the Latin word 'major' is not translated as 'great' in English), to whom this church in Pribram was dedicated, belongs together with his brother to the closest circle of Jesus' disciples. In his version of the "Good News" (this is the meaning of the word "gospel"), the Evangelist Mark lists the apostles: "James, the son of Zebedee, and John, the brother of James - to whom he gave the nickname Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder" (Mark 3:17). They are said to have been very temperamental, but were loyal followers of Jesus Christ, in whom they recognized the promised Messiah. According to the Acts of the Apostles, James was executed for his faith. His grave in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia (Spain) is one of the most famous and important pilgrimage destinations in the world.

There is a straight footpath with 343 steps from the old town up to the holy mountain. That alone would not be a highlight! But this path is completely covered from bottom to top! Halfway up you can leave this tunell-like building and turn onto a beautiful pedestrian avenue. Be sure to dig into the tour!

Here is an excerpt from the church guide: The holy mountain. "The holy mountain towers over the mining town of Pribram like a mighty castle. An extensive complex of early baroque buildings with picturesque towers forms the oldest and most famous place of pilgrimage in Bohemia. The holy mountain is the destination of countless pilgrims from near and far every year. This place of pilgrimage has always been one Sanctuary for the believer who finds refuge, comfort and strength in all his concerns. "

I was simply overwhelmed by this building. A magnificently decorated basilica is surrounded by a huge cloister with a rectangular base measuring 73x62 m. At each corner is a tower with a chapel. The cloister and the basilica were built between 1659 and 1670. Definitely worth seeing.
