The Tannensee is an artificially created reservoir. In terms of beauty, it surpasses the nearby Melchsee by lengths. It also provides a magnificent photo opportunity and, in its entirety, reminds us of the wild romance of the Scottish Highlands. If a column of kilt-wearing Scots, or barefoot hobbits, were to walk along its shore... we would hardly be surprised.

From Engstlensee, a well-rideable gravel path leads to Tannensee. Then up to Jochpass and back to Melchsee; the last section is partly demanding, but the nature is fantastic.

A technically easy descent. The path winds gently along the slope and is excellently maintained. The view of the secluded Gental Valley is breathtaking: lush green firs, rushing waterfalls, and spectacular rock formations dominate the scene. We set off early in the morning – fog and the play of light made the valley seem like a fantasy world. We even encountered a few marmots along the way.
