The variety was first commercialized in 1910. As part of the daily hot meal, the bintje was a popular potato in the Netherlands for a long time and was also widely sold to other countries. The developer of potato varieties Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries. From 1883, De Vries was head teacher at the public primary school in Suameer. De Vries named his new potato varieties after his children, pupils and former pupils.
