The chapel is a former Catholic pilgrimage church. During the period of German division, the Santa Clara Chapel served as a hinterland observation post and was deliberately painted bright white to fool refugees into believing they had already reached Bavarian territory.

"Visible from afar for hikers from the 540 m high Kapellenberg near Heinersgrün, the former Catholic pilgrimage church of St. Clara greets them. It was built in the 12th/13th century. First documented in 1529, as there was a chaplain at the manor and the church served as the castle chapel and burial site of the castle owners, the von Feilitzsch family. The chapel was renovated in 1740. With its onion-shaped dome, it is more reminiscent of Bavarian churches. Since 1995, the chapel has again had three bells, which ring down into the valley on Sundays at 6:00 p.m. Here, hikers enjoy an incomparably beautiful panoramic view of the near and far surroundings of the Vogtland, the Ore Mountains, and the Fichtel Mountains. The Santa Clara Chapel served as a former hinterland observation post during the time of German division and was deliberately painted bright white. cleaned. Refugees were supposed to believe they had already reached Bavarian territory. The St. Clara Chapel is part of the Reeves' Cultural Trail and is located on the Iron Curtain Trail. - https://www.vogtland-tourismus.de/de/poi/kapelle/st.-clara-kapelle-heinersgruen/25355731/

Heinersgrün is located not far from the former inner-German border in the Dröda Dam nature reserve. The St. Clara Chapel is the burial chapel of the Knights of Heinersgrün and a former pilgrimage church. Unfortunately it is closed. Opening times are not known. The view of Heinersgrün from the chapel alone is worth a detour from the usual hiking trails.
