September 21, 2026, Trail to Ypsarion Shelter

Yesterday I was on the Ypsarion from Potamia. A great hiking trail with breathtaking views. Before that, I had started from another starting point towards the highest mountain, but didn't make it. I can only warn against using paths that are not officially signposted and designated as hiking trails. These would be a big risk! Back to the Ypsarion. The negative and frustrating thing for me was that jeeps can drive up to the peak. Tourists get out 200 meters before the summit, hike up and sign the summit book. Great tourism! But otherwise, a very impressive tour.

On this section of the E4 it goes steeply uphill to the Refugio A. But mostly through forest and therefore quite shady. Unfortunately with little view.

It's directly on the E4 when you come up the Enipeas gorge. Refill your water supplies; it's steep uphill from here.

The monastery is partially rebuilt and is still being restored. You can walk through the courtyard. The upper floors are not accessible and are reserved for the monks.

The monastery has been destroyed several times and is always rebuilt. With EU funds, more than just security measures could be implemented by 2020. Currently, a monk lives on site who grants admission. At the entrance, cloaks are available to cover bare shoulders, cleavage, and uncovered knees. It remains a holy place.

At the southern tip of Kassandra, you also have a good view of the cliffs at the tip of Sithonia. Mount Athos, which towers over the third peninsula, can often be seen in the background.
