From the 1920s until 1945, generations of Fürstenwalde students learned within the walls of the so-called Aufbauschule fürs Leben (Building School for Life). In 1918, this prestigious building, with a main building and two symmetrically arranged wings, was inaugurated as a teachers' college, but shortly thereafter was used as a Aufbauschule (Building School). This was a school type that built on the foundations of elementary and middle schools. The curriculum emphasized practical skills rather than the classical humanistic educational ideals of the time. This state-run school also offered students from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to obtain their Abitur (university entrance qualification). In 1928, the Aufbauschule was merged with the Gymnasium (grammar school). After 1945, a Soviet unit moved into the site and built numerous garages and shelters. Soldiers and vehicles were stationed here until 1994. The area next to the Aufbauschule is currently home to the city of Fürstenwalde/Spree's fairgrounds. The entire district is to be redesigned, with the Aufbauschule as the starting point and focal point. Source: http://www.stadtgeschichte.fuerstenwalde-spree.de/seite/360228/Aufbauschule.html
