Lürken was a district of Eschweiler, north of Eschweiler-Hehlrath. The inhabitants of Lürken were resettled between 1960 and 1963. The village was excavated in 1965 due to the „Zukunft West“ open-cast lignite mine, being the first place in the Gruppe West area to be mined. Today, a memorial stone and the old village cross, located about 500 m north of the former village center (50° 51′ 30″ N, 6° 14′ 32.1″ E), commemorate Lürken. The small farming village played an important role in the history of the Reformed communities for centuries. The gravestones from the Protestant cemetery have been preserved in the entrance areas of the Dürwiß cemetery. The center of the village was Lürken Castle.
