The Puente de los Peligros, or Old Bridge, is a stone arch bridge over the Segura River. The bridge was completed in 1742. It is the oldest bridge still preserved in the city, hence the name Old Bridge, as opposed to the New or Iron Bridge which was built in 1903. The popular name of the Peligros Bridge comes from the presence next to it of a niche in which stands the image of a virgin, called the Peligros, who is deeply venerated in the city. On September 26, 1701, a flood of the Segura River destroyed the previous bridge (built in the 15th century) that connected the city to the right bank of the river and served as the beginning of the royal road to Cartagena. This paved port is famous because it has been included in the circuit of the Cycling Tour of Spain on several occasions. It is demanding, but worth the effort. Once at the summit, all that remains is to enjoy the splendid landscape.
