October 19, 2025, Scenic Winding Road

Starting just outside the town of San Giuseppe Jato, this stretch of provincial road 20 climbs up to the picturesque Portella della Paglia pass, in a succession of hairpin bends and breathtaking views. The surface isn't perfect, but you can pedal safely even on a small section of landslide, which is well-marked. Tackled in autumn/winter, it almost feels like you're not in Sicily.

The journey to Monreale was still strenuous, but the lack of traffic made it relaxing. A great stop at Scipione for pizza, espressos, gelato, and freshly baked rolls for later.

‘Albergo dei Poveri’ (?): Not to be confused with the palace of almost the same name in Palermo. I couldn't find much about this one, but maybe you know more? A spectacular view over Palermo from this point

Santa Cristina Gela is a small town in the Sicilian hinterland, famous for its village festivals. There are numerous moments of the year in which folkloristic and food and wine rites populate the squares. The Magna Via Francigena passes through here.

Monreale is a small town located a few kilometers from Palermo, at the foot of Mount Caputo. Its position makes it an unmissable viewpoint that embraces the entire bay of this important city. The cathedral with its Benedictine cloister is absolutely not to be missed.

How many no-traffic touring cycling routes are available around San Giuseppe Jato?

There are 8 dedicated no-traffic touring cycling routes around San Giuseppe Jato featured in this guide. These routes are generally considered difficult, offering a significant challenge for experienced cyclists.

What kind of terrain can I expect on these no-traffic cycling routes?

The routes traverse the diverse terrain of western Sicily, characterized by rolling hills, cultivated valleys, vineyards, and olive groves. While some sections may be paved, others can be unpaved and challenging, especially around features like Monte Jato. A notable feature is the Via Ferrovia Ovest, an asphalted road on an abandoned railway track, offering a constant gentle 2% slope and minimal traffic, even passing through tunnels large enough for bikes.

Are there any family-friendly no-traffic cycling options?

Given that all routes in this specific guide are rated as 'difficult' and involve significant elevation gain, they are generally not suitable for families with young children or beginners. However, the Via Ferrovia Ovest, part of the abandoned railway track system, offers a very gentle slope and minimal traffic, which might be suitable for more confident older children or families looking for a less strenuous, car-free experience within a longer route.

What are the best times of year to cycle in San Giuseppe Jato?

The region experiences a Mediterranean climate. Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October) generally offer the most pleasant temperatures for cycling, avoiding the intense heat of summer and the cooler, potentially wetter conditions of winter. These seasons also showcase the natural beauty of the cultivated landscapes.

What can I see along the no-traffic touring cycling routes?

Beyond the stunning natural landscapes of the Jato valley and Monte Jato, you can encounter various points of interest. Routes may pass by beautiful lakes such as Lake Poma or Lake of Piana degli Albanesi. You might also discover historical sites like the ancient city of 'Ietas' on Monte Jato, or cultural landmarks such as the Monreale Cathedral, depending on the specific route chosen.

Are there any circular no-traffic cycling routes available?

Is there public transport access to the starting points of these routes, especially for cyclists with bikes?

While San Giuseppe Jato is accessible, public transport options for carrying bicycles directly to route starting points can be limited in rural Sicilian areas.
