As of April 2025: Here in the lower area there is a construction site with a barrier sign, but the road is slowly accessible.

After the narrow alleys and steps through the old town, the climb to the rocks is worthwhile. Even in rainy weather, the rocks are easily accessible via iron stairs. In heavy rain, every small alley becomes a rushing stream.

Yes, there are several circular routes available. For instance, the route From Campomaggiore to Pietrapertosa and Castelmezzano – loop tour offers a challenging 39.5 km loop through the scenic landscape. Another option is the Castelmezzano – View of Castelmezzano loop from Campomaggiore–Pietrapertosa, covering 35.4 km with significant elevation.
Absolutely. The neighboring village of Pietrapertosa is a must-visit, often connected to Castelmezzano by routes and even the famous Volo dell'Angelo zipline. You can also explore the historic streets of Castelmezzano itself, with its medieval past, Norman Castle remains, and the Church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo.
The best months for cycling in the Lucanian Dolomites are typically spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these periods, the weather is generally milder and more stable, avoiding the intense heat of summer and the potential for snow or colder conditions in winter. This allows for more comfortable and enjoyable rides through the mountainous terrain.
While Castelmezzano is nestled in a mountainous region, public transport options exist, though they might be limited and require careful planning, especially with a bike. It's advisable to check local bus schedules and policies regarding bicycle transport in advance, as services can vary and may not always accommodate bikes directly.
Castelmezzano, being a small village, has limited parking, especially for larger vehicles. There are designated parking areas at the entrance of the village or slightly outside. It's recommended to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot. Some accommodations may also offer private parking for guests.
For experienced cyclists seeking a significant challenge, the Castelmezzano – Pietrapertosa Castle loop from Campomaggiore–Pietrapertosa is an excellent option. This route spans approximately 70.4 km with an impressive 1873 meters of elevation gain, offering an extensive and demanding touring cycling experience through the heart of the Lucanian Dolomites.
While Castelmezzano is a smaller village, some local tour operators or accommodations might offer bike rental services, particularly for mountain bikes given the terrain. It's best to inquire directly with local tourism offices or your accommodation provider in advance to confirm availability and types of bikes offered.
