After all, there are so many different and diverse attractions that it is impossible to write about WPN as just one attraction. Well, I wholeheartedly recommend it, especially the less frequented places.

Camaldolese Monastery in Wigry

Highlight • Religious Site

The Camaldolese Order (a Benedictine monastic order of pontifical right founded by Saint Romuald of Ravenna in 1012) was responsible for the creation of this monastery on the island of Wigry. This congregation settled here in 1668.

After the Third Partition of Poland in 1796, the Prussian authorities confiscated the Camaldolese estates, and in 1800, the monks were expelled from Wigry. The buildings subsequently suffered extensive damage, particularly during World War II. It was only after the conflict that reconstruction of the monastery began. In 1999, the Diocese of Wigry hosted Pope John Paul II. A small museum is dedicated to him.

On January 6, 1667, King Jan Kazimierz[3] presented the Camaldolese monks with an island on Lake Wigry together with a hunting lodge. In 1671 the first wooden church and the seat of the Camaldolese monks fell victim to a fire. In 1694, the Camaldolese monks began building a large monastery complex. The island was connected to the mainland by a dike, which was raised and regulated. The buildings were built on two terraces 11 and 16 meters above the water and protected by retaining walls. The dominant architectural feature was the church on the west side of the upper terrace[4]. The construction of the church was completed in 1745. In 1800 the Prussian government resettled the monks in Warsaw and their seat was taken over by the newly created Wigry diocese and the church became a cathedral. A musical choir has been added. In 1818 the bishopric was transferred to Sejny and the church served as a parish church.
In 1825 the wind torn sheet metal was removed and the roof was covered with tiles. In 1835, marble balustrades were transported to Suwałki, and later two large statues of Saint Roch and Saint Benedict, which still stand in front of the Alexander Church in Suwałki. The church was restored several times in the 19th century. During the First World War the church was badly damaged. The towers, roof and east wall were destroyed. Reconstruction did not begin until 1922, and in 1933 the first service was held. In 1944 the church was badly damaged again and was rebuilt by 1966. In 1981 the church was painted pink, cream and ivory. In 1986, a marble floor was laid in the nave and chancel. The earlier marble has been retained in the chapels. On June 9, 1999, the church was visited by Pope John Paul II during his seventh pilgrimage to Poland (Translated from Wikipedia).

The footbridges over the marshy terrain of the Czarna Hańcza River valley are one of the most attractive sections of the entire Wigry Trail. For safety reasons, they are covered with wire mesh, allowing for relatively safe movement on the damp wooden surface.
