The Hôtel de Peyrat is a city palace (French: hôtel particulier) whose current appearance largely dates from the 17th century. The tower is also called "Tour des Prisons" (Prison Tower) because prison cells were formerly located in the basement levels. In the 17th century, Jean de Peyrat had the estate expanded into a representative townhouse. At times, it also housed the city's judicial and administrative rooms.
