Nice 'snaky'-shape bridge for cyclists and pedestrians The 'De Blauwersbrug' ('Blauwers Bridge') with its elegant, winding design is made for cyclists and pedestrians and connects the city with Barakkenpark. Its name honors Menen's history as a border town where, especially between the world wars, creative smuggling flourished. 'Blauwers' smuggled coffee, butter, alcohol, and cigarettes, helping neighbors survive tough times. This bridge is both a literal and symbolic link between past and present, embodying local pride and telling a powerful story in a single word. The name 'De Blauwersbrug' honors the unique past of our border town. In the last century—especially between the world wars—the neighborhood was the scene of creative smuggling practices. Coffee, butter, liquor, and cigarettes were smuggled across the border by so-called "blauwers," people who, with ingenuity and courage, helped their neighbors survive. These stories are part of Menen's collective memory and contribute to the pride of the neighborhood. Today, the bridge literally spans the border between the city and Barakkenpark, and also figuratively, with a name that refers to this vibrant piece of heritage. "De Blauwersbrug" (The Blauwers Bridge) is powerful, distinctive, and locally rooted. It arouses curiosity, tells a story in a single word, and connects the past and present in a city shaped by its border location. A name recognizable for the neighborhood and meaningful for everyone who passes by.

Of course, these are not the belfry and town hall of Tourcoing, as the name of the highlight initially indicated, but those of Menen. The belfry, incorporated into the town hall, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Grote Markt. The historical function of this city tower was to warn of dangers such as fire with bells and to safely store important city documents. The foundation stone was laid in 1574 during the Wars of Religion. The building only acquired its current form in 1828. In the centuries before, the belfry was damaged several times. For example, during the siege of Menen in 1706, the spire was blown off. As a witness to a turbulent past, the 33-meter belfry still towers above the surrounding area today. It offers a magnificent view of Menen's city center and the border region. Beneath the belfry lies a bomb shelter from the Second World War. Source: information board on site
