Quote: The history of the Old Town Hall In August 1638, preparations began for the construction of the new town hall. In March 1639, the laying of the foundation began. The town hall was put into use at the end of 1639 and has since played a prominent role in the goings-on in the village of Middelharnis. Administrative decisions about the village are made there, marriages are concluded, justice is dispensed, and sentences are carried out. Less known is that the town hall also functioned as a weigh house. Unfortunately, little is known about how the building fulfilled this role. Remarkable are the three freestanding statues on pedestals on the pediment. From left to right, justice (Justitia), charity (Caritas), and fortitude (Fortitudo) adorn the facade. After 1811, the town hall lost its judicial function because the judiciary in the Netherlands was centralized. From this moment on, the town hall only played a role as the administrative center of the village.
