One of the more unique overlooks on the parkway in this part of Virginia, Thunder Ridge Overlook can be found at Milepost 74 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Abbott Lake is a 24-acre reservoir right off the side of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The lake offers options for fishing, hiking, and a number of other recreational activities. If you are feeling spry, you can take on a mountainous hike on the Fallingwater — Flat Top National Recreational Trail that leaves from the eastern end of the lake.

There technically isn't a set "summit" on Flat Top Mountain, but there are a few rocky outcrops that offer viewpoints of the surrounding area and the other nearby Peaks of Otter. You can easily see Abbott Lake to the south and Bedford Reservoir to the east from the lookouts. There are a couple different ways to approach the mountain, and both require a fair bit of climbing and mileage.
