July 25, 2024, Virginia Creeper Trail

The Virginia Creeper Trail is one of the premier rails-to-trails works in the county. For nearly 35 miles of converted railroad hikers, bikers, and runners can explore the wilderness at their own pace. This particular section follows along the path of Whitetop Laurel Creek, with a number of bridges as the path and creek cross each other at the bottom of the valley.

Just off the main road through Mendota you'll find the trailhead for the Mendota Trail. There is a small parking area where you can leave your vehicle and begin the 12.5 mile trail to Bristol. This is a wide, flat former railroad, so expect to see bike riders as well as other hikers on the path.

July 25, 2024, Mendota Trail

The Mendota Trail is a rails-to-trails project that connects Bristol to Mendota. Along the way the trail passes by Abrams Creek and the Holston River. Being rails-to-trails means this is a multi-use path so expect some cyclists to be sharing the way with you. However, it's not usually busy and there is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy themselves.

Whitetop Post Office is a little ways outside of the town of Whitetop. There is not much else out here, pretty much just green space. This post office seems out of place, but if you have been meaning to send a letter, now could be the time!

This small but peaceful waterfall is on Whitetop Laurel Creek and can be seen from the Virginia Creeper Trail. It's a great spot to take a break and listen to the water flow off the rocks. On the other side of the creek runs the Appalachian Trail.
