July 21, 2025, Knobstone Trail - Deam Lake to Round Knob

Stretching 58 miles from Deam Lake State Recreation Area to Delaney Creek Park, the Knobstone Trail is Indiana’s longest and most rugged footpath. It follows the spine of the Knobstone Escarpment, carving a route along high ridges with sweeping views of the wooded hills below. The section between Deam Lake and Round Knob sets the tone early—quiet, hilly, and deeply immersive, with a few scenic overlooks tucked between long, steady climbs.

A short climb rewards you with one of the better open views on the Knobstone Trail. Expect rolling hills and forest canopy spreading to the horizon—a perfect spot to catch your breath, snap a photo, or just enjoy Indiana’s rugged scenery.

A small dam surrounded by forest with basic facilities. The Knobstone Trail passes by Delaney Creek Dam Number 5, which is also a good access point. It has a small parking area with restrooms and picnic tables. It’s a convenient place to start or finish a hike, refill your water, and take a break before tackling the nearby climbs. The area is usually quiet on weekdays but can get busier with local visitors on weekends.

This is a more challenging section of the Knobstone Trail that takes you alongside Johnson Knob. It has a steady climb with rocky, root-filled singletrack along the ridge. You’ll get some nice views of the forest and the valleys below, especially in fall, but watch your footing on the descents. Water is limited here, so bring it with you from Delaney Creek (always filter it). It’s a quiet spot that sees fewer hikers than other segments because it’s a side trail that not everyone does.
