The Alpine Ridge Trail Overlook is a well-known but short hiking trail in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, offering a unique alpine experience with spectacular panoramic views. The trail begins right at the Alpine Visitor Center, the highest visitor center in the entire U.S. National Park System. The entire trail is paved and includes approximately 225 steps, making the climb easier but quite strenuous due to the gradient and elevation. Because the Trail Ridge Road is closed during the winter months, the trail is only open seasonally, typically from late May/early June to mid/late October.

Far from the powerful current of the river flowing through the Grand Canyon, this is where the Colorado River begins. From here, it continues on through an impressive seven US and two Mexican states. Keep an eye out for moose and elk, common to the area.

awesome trail in the Brainard Rec Center. We did over 9 miles with over 1100 feet of elevation difference. I hope to do it more snow on the ground next time.

Zimmerman Lake is a scenic, small lake ringed with fir and spruce trees in the Roosevelt National Forest. This lake is a great habitat for native cutthroat trout, which you can sometimes see jumping out of the water for bugs. This picturesque spot is accessible via a relatively short, moderate trail on an old logging road, making it a great destination for people of all ages and ability levels.

The Colorado River here is an Alpine torrent. We are very far from the Grand Canyon in Arizona, where the river is very imposing. What is noticeable along this path that goes up the river, is that the wildlife is very present, and you can sometimes see herds of Elk, and Moose.

There are nearly 10 family-friendly hiking routes in Neota Wilderness featured in this guide. These include a mix of easy and moderate trails, perfect for exploring the unique high-elevation landscape with your family.
Neota Wilderness is known for its rugged, high-elevation terrain, featuring distinctive flattened granite ridges, spruce and fir forests, and expansive meadows. Trails often follow creek valleys with abundant willows and sedges, providing a diverse and scenic experience. Be prepared for varying conditions, as snow can persist into warmer months at higher elevations.
Yes, for an easy and relatively short option, consider the Zimmerman Lake Trail, which is about 4.5 km long. Another great choice is the Colorado River Trail – Colorado River Trailhead loop from Shipler Mountain, which is around 3.4 km with minimal elevation gain, making it very accessible for families.
The best time to visit Neota Wilderness for family hiking is typically during the warmer months, from late spring through early autumn. Due to its high elevation (10,000 to 11,896 feet), snow can persist for extended periods, especially in creek valleys. Always check current conditions before heading out, as weather can change rapidly.
The diverse habitats in Neota Wilderness support a variety of wildlife. In the lush creek valleys, you might spot deer, elk, and moose. Other animals like black bears, mountain lions, and bobcats also inhabit the area, though they are more elusive. Always maintain a safe distance and never feed wildlife.
Absolutely! The Zimmerman Lake loop from Joe Wright Creek is an easy option, covering about 3.5 km. For a slightly longer, moderate loop, the Hiking loop from Milner Pass offers a more extensive experience at around 14.2 km.
The family-friendly trails in Neota Wilderness are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars. Reviewers often praise the opportunities for solitude, the rugged natural beauty, and the chance to experience a truly wild and undeveloped landscape, even on the easier routes.
While Neota Wilderness is known for its backcountry solitude rather than developed landmarks, you'll encounter stunning natural features. Keep an eye out for the unique flattened granite ridges, the three main drainages (Trap, Corral, and Neota Creeks), and high-altitude lakes like Blue Lake, Neota Lake, and Zimmerman Lake. The area also offers panoramic views from higher elevations.
Given the high elevation and potential for sudden weather changes, it's crucial to pack layers of clothing, rain gear, plenty of water, snacks, a map and compass (or GPS device), and a first-aid kit. Sun protection, including hats and sunscreen, is also essential. Always be prepared for challenging conditions and practice Leave No Trace principles.
Many trails in Neota Wilderness offer scenic views, especially as you gain elevation. While not a family-friendly route in this guide, the area around Iron Mountain (just southwest of the wilderness boundary) provides panoramic views of the area's drainages. Even on moderate family trails like the Elevation 12.005 feet above sea level loop from Alpine Visitor Center, you can experience impressive high-altitude vistas.
