July 26, 2026, SignaTUR MASSIV Hiking Trail

The SignaTUR MASSIV is a 340 kilometre long distance hiking route from Sota Seter to Haukeliseter. The Breheimen section is the most northern part of the entire route, and it is 48 kilometres long. The 25-kilometre route from Nørdstedalseter to Sognefjellshytta is stage 2 out of the Breheimen section. The route is hard and hilly, but you will be rewarded with vistas that will be filled with glaciers, rivers, lakes and peaks on all sides.

Storvatnet is a beautiful lake and a prominent feature on the hike between Nørdstedalseter and Sognefjellshytta. This lake sits in a rocky environment, and the dam head is a good place to get a view of it and to have a rest.

A beautiful hike to the glacier.

You follow a winding summer road up from Fortun, and then—there it is: Nørdstedalseter, a friendly staffed cabin right at the top of Fortunsdalen. It’s a cozy hub between Breheimen and Jotunheimen, with around 40 beds and a real mountain hut atmosphere. In summer, you can drive right up; in winter, it’s ski tracks all the way . Inside, there’s a wood stove, electricity, showers, and meals served—breakfast, dinner, even local lamb or deer dishes if you're here in season. The trails around are stunning—think glaciers, lush valleys, and high peaks. It's the kind of place where you drop in, warm up with a hot meal, refill your water, and make plans for the next day's adventure.

This trail runs alongside the Illvatnet lake, crossing a scree slope. This makes it challenging, especially in windy and rainy weather.

And stay at Europe's highest mountain pass at 1,428 m and enjoy summer skiing (until mid-July) and the snowy areas.

You can expect to find well-preserved trails that showcase a unique blend of wilderness, traditional mountain farms (sæter-environments), varied plant life, and interesting geological formations. The focus on preservation means a beautiful and distinctive river nature, providing scenic spots for family outings.

Are there any easy, short loop trails suitable for families with young children?

While the routes detailed in this guide are generally long and rated as difficult, Høydalen Landskapsvernområde, as a protected landscape, offers extensive natural areas where shorter, easier paths can often be found. We recommend exploring the vicinity of traditional mountain farms (sæter-environments) or along the river nature, as these areas often have more accessible tracks suitable for families with young children looking for a gentle stroll rather than a strenuous hike. Always check local signage for current trail conditions and difficulty.

What are the best times of year to visit Høydalen Landskapsvernområde with family?

The best time to visit Høydalen Landskapsvernområde for family hiking is typically during the late spring, summer, and early autumn months. During these periods, the weather is generally milder, trails are clear of snow, and the diverse vegetation and river nature are at their most vibrant. Early autumn also offers beautiful fall colors. Winter hiking is possible but requires specialized gear and experience due to snow and colder conditions, making it less ideal for most families.

Are dogs allowed on the hiking trails in Høydalen Landskapsvernområde?

Generally, dogs are welcome on trails in Høydalen Landskapsvernområde, but it is crucial to keep them on a leash, especially during the grazing season (typically May to October) to protect livestock and wildlife. Always ensure your dog is under control and that you clean up after them. Specific rules may apply in certain protected zones or near traditional farm areas, so look for local signage.

What kind of natural features or landmarks can we see while hiking?

Høydalen Landskapsvernområde is rich in natural and cultural landmarks. You can expect to encounter valuable sæter-environments (traditional mountain farms) that offer a glimpse into historical land use. The area also features diverse vegetation, unique geological formations, and beautiful river nature, providing varied scenery throughout your hike. These elements contribute to the area's significant biodiversity and ecological value.

What should we wear for a family hike in Høydalen Landskapsvernområde?

For family hikes in Høydalen Landskapsvernområde, it's best to dress in layers, as mountain weather can change quickly. Comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes are essential. Depending on the season, bring rain gear, a warm jacket, and sun protection. Even on shorter walks, carrying water, snacks, and a basic first-aid kit is always recommended. For longer or more challenging routes, ensure everyone has appropriate gear for the terrain and duration.

Are there any circular walks available for families?

While the routes listed in this guide are primarily point-to-point, the extensive natural areas and network of well-preserved trails within Høydalen Landskapsvernområde mean that shorter, circular options can often be found, especially around the traditional sæter-environments or specific natural features. These might not be officially designated as 'circular walks' but can be adapted for family-friendly loops. We recommend consulting local maps or information boards upon arrival to identify suitable shorter circuits.

What are the difficulty levels of the listed routes in this guide?

The routes specifically highlighted in this guide, such as Bøvertun - Sognefjellshytta - Krossbu, Massiv Trail: Sota Sæter to Nørdstedalseter, and SignaTUR MASSIV — Breheimen Stage — Nørdstedalseter to Sognefjellshytta, are all rated as 'difficult'. Is there public transport available to reach the trailheads?

Information on specific public transport options directly to all trailheads within Høydalen Landskapsvernområde can vary. Given the nature of a protected landscape, direct public transport links to every starting point might be limited. It is advisable to check local bus schedules or regional transport services for connections to nearby towns or access points, and plan for potential taxi services or private vehicle use for the final leg to more remote trailheads.

Where can we find parking near the hiking trails?
