Until 1878, Pragal belonged to the parish of Santa Maria de Almada; after this parish was dissolved, it was incorporated into the parish of Almada. There is no certainty about the dates of Pragal's origin; however, it is thought that the settlement predates the 16th century. The main economic activity in Pragal was agriculture until the 19th century, at which point the region underwent a huge economic transformation as a consequence of diseases affecting vine cultivation. Thus, the predominantly agricultural population began to organize its economy around the development of small industries (soap making and red clay pottery) and local commerce, or even opted to emigrate. Economic, social, and cultural transformation was inevitable, evidenced by the change from rural dwellings to residences where one or more working-class families lived, cultivating small gardens attached to their homes, thus managing to overcome the low wages they received at that time. Already in the 20th century, during the 1920s and 30s, there was a progressive degradation of housing without any attention being paid to the needs of the region. By 1974, when these issues became relevant, new water and sewage networks were installed, streets were paved, and many buildings were renovated. Following the 25th of April Revolution, the organization and the City Council, together with strong popular intervention, made it possible to preserve and enhance the cultural heritage of Pragal.
