The Lombardsbrücke both separates and connects the Inner and Outer Alster lakes – it is, so to speak, a transition between two very different urban landscapes. As a road and railway bridge from 1868, it offers one of Hamburg's most beautiful panoramic views: on one side, the historic backdrop of the city center with the Rathaus and Alsterarkaden, on the other, the vast, green Außenalster. The Lombardsbrücke is a road and railway bridge over the Alster. It marks the old route of the road pavement that separated the Outer Alster from the Inner Alster. The bridge is 69m long and spans the Alster in 3 arches. It is crossed under by a pedestrian tunnel.

The Alster fountain, which shoots water up to an average height of 60 meters, was put into operation in April 1987 at 12 noon. During winter, the fountain is replaced by a Christmas tree decorated with lights. In cold winters, the Außenalster (outer Alster lake) sometimes freezes over, and thousands of Hamburg residents stroll across the ice during the so-called Alstereisvergnügen (Alster ice fun). Children are out on skates, and even adults take a running start and slide around joyfully.
