June 20, 2026, "Alte Kirche" - St.-Dionysius-Kirche

The Old Church in Welbergen - built in the second half of the 11th century - is today one of the best-preserved Romanesque buildings in Münsterland. You enter the interior of the church today through a tower portal. The church space is a hall, i.e. equipped without pillars. In the altar area there is a particularly elaborate tomb, in which the knight Johann von Oldenhus is buried. In the north wall are embedded two deeply recessed reliefs, in the middle of which is depicted a flat slab with a centaur. This pagan hybrid creature, half human, half horse, is intended to represent strength in a Christian sense. The reliefs probably date from the 12th century. The church is used today for various cultural events, especially concerts and lectures. Source: https://www.ochtrup.de/kultur-freizeit/museen-und-sehenswertes/alte-kirche-von-welbergen/

The small water tower is always a worthwhile anchor point on any bike tour. The garden is always super well-kept.

Inside, you'll find harmonious furnishings, often dating back to the original construction period. The interplay of light, streaming through the high windows, and the vast vaulted structure creates a festive yet inviting atmosphere. 🕯️🎨

Built between 1901 and 1908, the church impresses with its slender, upward-striving architecture. Conceived as a three-nave basilica, it offers an imposing sight that almost seems to burst the village frame. ⛪✨

🚲⛪✨ The St. Dionysius Church in Welbergen is the neo-Gothic centerpiece of the village and, together with its Romanesque predecessor, forms a unique ecclesiastical double ensemble in the region. While the „Old Church“ is the silent witness of the Middle Ages, St. Dionysius represents the magnificent sacred architecture of the penultimate turn of the century.

Inside you will find a fixed table-bench combination. It is the ideal place to refill your water bottle, eat an apple, or study the map for the rest of the way. 🥪🥤

The solid wooden construction is closed on three sides and offers a firm roof over your head. Whether a sudden summer shower or a stiff breeze blows across the flat land – here you stay dry and protected from the wind. 🌧️💨

It is nestled in the typical park landscape and offers you shelter or a break exactly when you are enjoying the expanse of fields between the collegiate village and the water castle.
