A beautiful excursion destination and viewpoint is Alicudi's first church, built in 1821.

One of the paths is closed, and the other one is clearly not walked very frequently. It's full of plants, and sometimes it's hard to pass through, especially that some parts are pretty steep, and at the same time, you need to balance yourself and be careful with all the bushes and opuncias attacking your face. Said that, the view at the top is spectacular! I took a longer break there just to enjoy sun, view of the sea, other islands and fumarole, wonderful place.

At a height of 481 m on Monte Saraceno, there is a gigantic panoramic view of the younger Fossa (391 m), surrounded by the old volcanic base of the island of Vulcano, as well as the island of Lipari and, in clear weather, as far as Salina. Most hikers (99%) climb the Fossa to see the fumaroles and look down on the crater. Alternatively, you can simply look at the fumaroles at the harbor and then admire the overall scenery on Monte Saraceno. (The fumaroles of the Fossa cannot be seen from the summit.)

The temperate climate makes spring and autumn ideal for hiking in the Aeolian Islands. During these seasons, temperatures are cooler, and the islands are adorned with lush flora, providing a more comfortable and scenic experience.
The Aeolian Islands, being volcanic in origin, offer dramatic and varied terrain. Hikers can expect everything from steep climbs through volcanic sand, as seen on Stromboli, to winding trails through lush forests on Salina, and paths across ancient lava flows and pumice quarries on Lipari.
Absolutely. The islands are rich in unique natural features. You can hike to the Gran Cratere of Vulcano, witness the Sciara del Fuoco (Stream of Fire) on Stromboli, or explore the white pumice quarries on Lipari. Other highlights include the therapeutic mud baths on Vulcano and the ancient terracing on Filicudi and Alicudi.
For truly unique volcanic experiences, Stromboli and Vulcano are exceptional. Stromboli offers guided treks to witness its continuous eruptions, especially spectacular at night. On Vulcano, you can hike to the Gran Cratere to observe steaming fumaroles and enjoy panoramic views of the archipelago.
Many trails in the Aeolian Islands offer breathtaking panoramic views. For instance, the hike to Mount Fossa delle Felci on Salina provides extensive views over the sea and surrounding islands. On Lipari, the Belvedere di Quattrocchi offers iconic vistas of the Faraglioni rock formations and Vulcano.
Yes, there are several circular routes. A popular choice is the Monte Fossa delle Felci – loop hike on the island of Salina, which ascends the archipelago's highest peak. Another option is the Monte Saraceno – loop tour on the Island of Vulcano, offering diverse scenery.
For a more remote and untamed hiking experience, consider the westernmost islands of Filicudi and Alicudi. These islands are characterized by ancient terracing and traditional mule paths, offering a quieter exploration away from the more frequented areas.
Yes, for safety reasons, hiking to the summit of Stromboli, an active volcano, requires a certified mountain guide. It's always advisable to check local regulations for other trails, especially those near active volcanic areas, as conditions can change.
