Ruins of the village of Mala Učka

Highlight • Historical Site

Mala Učka is at 995 meters above sea level the highest rural town in Istria. In Mala Učka there used to be 130 inhabitants called Učkari. The same operated livestock or were known for their good cheese.

During the Second World War, more precisely on 30 April 1944, the village was completely burned by the Italians and Germans, so that the Učkari had to move away due to the difficult economic situation. The village was nevertheless picturesque enough in such a condition to be entered in the register of immovable cultural monuments in 1976 as a protected rural unit.

Today Mala Učka is a village without permanent residents. However, in the summer months, during the local cattle pasture, the shepherd family Maliki, whose excellent sheep cheese and skuta cheese can be bought, stays here. The cheese products of the family are also labeled with the eco-label.

The impressive works on the high cliffs are made with ecological paints and inspired by prehistoric art and floral motifs. The works are visible from afar and mark the cliff as a natural sanctuary that connects earth and sky. Land art point #14 on Učka Land Art Trail. Rock art by Boris Pecigoš, Master of Arts.
Rock art Lišaj follows the natural forms of lichen on the rock, emphasizing the symbiosis of living things and stone, the energy of the sun that is felt here, and the power of life that is always renewed.
